How to follow through on your goals
Here is a familiar story we can all relate to:
You start a goal with a great burst of energy, excited to tackle all the tasks and action steps.
As time goes by you start encountering difficulties, your motivation dwindles, and the project goes on the shelf with too many other things to mention.
How does anybody ever get things done?
Here are a seven tips you can implement to help you stay motivated and follow through on your goals:
1. Remember the “Why”
It might help to step back a moment and remember the reason you’re doing this in the first place.
2. Visualise Finishing
Imagine how nice it will be when the task is finished and the benefits you’ll enjoy or, imagine the liabilities of not finishing!
3. Make It Easy
Try to find some way you can make the tasks more fun, more interesting, or simply easier. If it’s a little boring, find a way to gamify it.
4. Block Out Time
If you’re having trouble working in fits and starts, set aside a specific stretch of time where you can finish the tasks or make significant progress on them.
5. Monitor your Progress
If you’re halfway through the task and losing steam, look at how much work you’ve done already to kick some motivation into gear. Remind yourself it will all be a waste of time if you don’t finish.
6. Change Your Mindset
You might have trouble finishing because you feel the task is too difficult or you don’t have the confidence. Try adopting a growth mindset and think about it as an exciting challenge and opportunity to learn.
7. Hold Yourself Accountable
Tell trusted people, you’re working on this task and when you’ll be done, like your partner or a mentor. Now, if you don’t finish, you’ll be letting others down as well as yourself.
Following through on tasks and goals isn’t always easy to do. But try some of the these tips and see what works best from you.
